Smartphones and Inter-Generational Communication: The Web 2.0 Advantage

ABSTRACT The generational gap between younger age groups and senior persons who use mobile technology has been well documented. It is the purpose of this paper to document the challenges that senior persons face as it relates to the use of mobile technology. In addition, this research paper will reveal how mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, can be used to improve or enhance their social interactions amongst persons apart of their peer group as well as younger individuals. Therefore, it will be very important to outline what are the steps necessary to enhance the usability of mobile devices by older individuals while interacting with various forms of Web 2.0 technology.

A Personal Virtual Assistant

From the inception of the very first computer system we realized the future potentials and possibilities when we combine a computational computer system with natural human behaviors. One of the human behaviors that scientists wish to integrate with a computer system is natural language (NL). “Natural language is any language which arises in an unpremeditated fashion as the result of the innate facility for language possessed by the human intellect” [1]. NL is natural to human being and it is being use by you and I on a daily basis for communication and interaction. NL actions majority comprised of speaking, signaling, and writing. It is through these actions that allow human being to effectively communicate with one another. With the emergence of natural language interface (NLI) type of systems we now have a mechanism that helps us effectively and efficiently communicate and interact with computer systems. Natural language based systems can tap into many different types of data sources available on the Internet to retrieve relevant information for end users. These systems can be thought of as a separate silo of mashable type of systems whereby natural language is the primary driver for their existence. With this concept in mind this paper will explore a number of ways to integrate a variety of application programming interface (API) to build an NLI system as well introducing some of the potential challenges that one may face.

ICARUS – Adaptive Tag Cloud Navigational and Recommender System

Current tagging systems experience several problems related to recommending accuracy of a resource. High number of users and related topical diversification, coupled with the unique vocabularies, as well as the popularity bias are some of the main obstacles to successful recommendation. The user interfaces, utilized for topical narrowing and searching for the specific term often fail at being intuitive and user friendly, mainly due to the inability to visualize subsequent navigational paths. This work presents a concept for ICARUS, a recommender system with integrated novel user interface, which attempts to produce an answer to these problems by utilizing approach for balancing of the user and popularity biases and an intuitive interface with navigational paths prediction. The research conducted focused on the user acceptance of the interface in order to provide the justification for the future development. The results showed that ICARUS interface has the potential to outperform the conventional ones.

Updated Presentation - Using Formal Specification Models and

Many people depend on web applications for important daily activities. But web application quality has not kept pace with popularity. Hence, improved web application quality is needed and increased testing can help. One step in this direction involves creating schemes to support automatic generation of navigation test cases. Approaches involving formal models, Unified Modeling Language development models and other mechanisms have been tried. But they are always used in isolation. Consequently, a combination of formal specification models and UML models for the generation of test cases is proposed. To evaluate the effectiveness of this approach a case study is used. Combined model based test cases are compared to captured user sessions of volunteers. Since test cases and user sessions are just sequences of logical web pages, Levenshtein distance is used for comparison purposes. Preliminary empirical results show there is value to the approach in that the combined test set does a better job of mimicking real user sessions than does test cases from UML models alone. There are a few advantages to the approach. It is easy to create the models and subsequent test case generation can be completely automated. With the approach, test cases are available very early in the development process when it is more economical to repair the problems they identify. Contributions made from the study involve the proposal of an innovative model combination, evidence to support its merit and the identification of implementation hurdles.
