Emergency Management with Human-Computer Interaction: Crowdsourcing

In contrast to how emergency management is often understood from just monitoring on-line activity, crowdsourcing allows the change to focus where mass emergency response by the public can be powerful, self-organizing and collective intelligent power. Crowdsourcing in an emergency situation has provided us some idea on how public can contribute towards emergency relief efforts. The research problem is trying to find an answer to: How can publicly-available peer-generated information be deemed to be trustworthy, secure and accurate, so that it can be combined with official information sources for optimal, local decision-making by members of the public during wide emergency situations? This paper analyzes the crowdsourcing socio-technical tools design to better understand how accessibility and ease of use affect the quality, trustworthiness and integrity of the system and information. Additionally, empirical study results display different emergency services volunteers’ perception, needs and concerns in regards to emergency management design challenges.

TMA 4 - Mobile Healthcare Interfaces and Relationship to Social Independence for Elderly

In this paper, we explore the relationship between user interfaces on mobile healthcare systems and social independence for the elderly. This is an important area of research that needs to be further explored in order to meet growing pressures in our healthcare system. Very little research has been done in order to explore the social concerns that elderly have with the adoption of new technology. As a part of this research we investigate different ways that we can make interfaces more usable by the elderly, how we make the systems more valuable, and how we can assist with the growing concerns of social isolation amongst the elderly.

Examining Usability Guidelines for Mobile Learning Portals

Ten usability guidelines were created to help design highly effective, easy to use, satisfactory, and quality mobile learning portals for hand held devices. These guidelines need to be tested in order to prove their validity and reliability, so that the evidence makes them accepted as appropriate for instructional design strategies and mobile curriculum development. One approach is to do self-reporting field tests with prototypes adhering to the ten usability guidelines. Participants are given a pre-test questionnaire to determine what they think and feel about mobile learning portals. Then, they are given a week to use the prototype with a range of tasks. By self-reporting their experiences along the same questions they did in the pre-test, they are well prepared to remember and answer a post-test questionnaire afterwards. The purpose is to build up concrete empirical evidence to support or to refute the assumptions presented by these ten usability guidelines.
