TMA 4 - Mobile Healthcare Interfaces and Relationship to Social Independence for Elderly

In this paper, we explore the relationship between user interfaces on mobile healthcare systems and social independence for the elderly. This is an important area of research that needs to be further explored in order to meet growing pressures in our healthcare system. Very little research has been done in order to explore the social concerns that elderly have with the adoption of new technology. As a part of this research we investigate different ways that we can make interfaces more usable by the elderly, how we make the systems more valuable, and how we can assist with the growing concerns of social isolation amongst the elderly.

Just-in-time Ecological Momentary Intervention

The purpose of this paper is to design a research methodology to study the effectiveness of using just-in-time ecological momentary interventions (EMI) on impacting human behavior. Past research reveals that EMI delivered through mobile devices is effective on supporting behavior treatments where repetitive notifications were sent at random or predetermined times to ‘remind’ the user. This research introduces a ‘smart’ EMI that delivers adaptive social support contents. This method is expected to be more effective than the traditional repetitive method. The proposed solution is to implement a prototype mobile app that is capable of generating reminders based on user’s routine exercise time and venue. Evaluation will be performed using randomized controlled trial where the result of the group using a ‘smart’ EMI app is compared to a group using a ‘non-smart’ version. Quantitative and qualitative analysis will be conducted on the data collected via questionnaires, user interviews and automatic data upload.
